PRESS RELEASE ISSUED 9TH DECEMBER 2014 A BETTER FUTURE FOR NIGERIANS WITH WOMEN ACTIVE PARTICIPATION IN ELECTIVE POSITIONS

Women Consortium of Nigeria (WOCON) is a nonpartisan, non-religious and Non-Governmental Organisation committed to the promotion of the rights of women and children with United Nations Special Consultative Status.

First we wish to congratulate all the political Parties who have held their primaries and the respective winners of the Party tickets for the Governorship positions.

We have noted with grave concern that as is customary majority of the Political Parties do not have women as their gubernatorial candidates despite the numerical strength of women as registered voters.

Consequently we wish to remind the Parties of their commitment to ensuring that women are active participants in the executive positions so as to guarantee sustainable development in our country.

To this end we STRONGLY URGE the political parties to ensure that the deputy Governorship positions are reserved for the women in their respective Parties in the spirit of twining and towards attaining at least 35% affirmative action.

Needless to say that the women of this country and gender friendly men have RESOLVED to reject same sex candidates for the Governorship and deputy Governorship positions.

WE CALL ON ALL NIGERIANS TO SUPPORT THIS CALL FOR A BETTER FUTURE FOR US ALL AS WE HAVE NO OTHER COUNTRY.

GOD BLESS NIGERIA. (AMEN)

Signed by

Chief (Mrs.) Bisi Olateru-Olagbegi
