2016 International Day of the Girl -Child

CELEBRATE THE GIRL-CHILD 2016.

Girls progress=Goals Progress. A global data movement.

Women Consortium of Nigeria (WOCON) today join the world community to celebrate the girl-child. October 11 is a day to celebrate the strength, dedication and achievements of girls all over the world .

This year’s theme is targeted towards achieving the vision 2030 in the listed 17 targets and 169 goals of the Sustainable Development Goals and emphasis is been placed on the need to harness the data required to ensure programs, policies and services respond adequately to the needs of girls. Girls should be empowered to achieve their dreams and build better lives for themselves and their communities.

WOCON team in Abeokuta, Ogun State visited Abeokuta Girls Grammar School, Onikolobo Abeokuta in Ogun State to celebrate the girls with a talk. The goals were discussed and the roles of the girls in achieving the listed goals. The different forms of abuse affecting the girl-child development was discussed and the girls were advised on ways of handling any form of abuse.

We must intentionally and collectively direct increased resources to closing the data gap if we are to be held accountable to girls and achieve the ambitious 2030 agenda for “people, planet and
prosperity.”
